Caring for Aging Loved Ones
Part of the Focused Healthy Family's EParent Club
Are you struggling with the responsibility of caring for an aging parent or relative?
Do you have questions about their mobility, daily activities, mental functioning or concerns about the person who is caring for them?
My dad keeps forgetting his medication, and he won’t listen to me, what am I supposed to do?
How can I keep caring for my husband when he falls all the time?
I live far away from my parents, how am I supposed to help them?
How am I supposed to manage raising a teen, my job and caring for my parents?
They said my mom can’t live at home anymore, how do I decide the best place for her and convince her she needs to live somewhere else? And without her hating me?
Gina Grothoff graduated with a degree in Occupational Therapy in 1992. Since that time, she has worked in a variety of settings including acute hospital rehabilitation, sub-acute rehab, long-term care, home health care, and outpatient rehabilitation for Independent living, assisted living and memory care facilities. Her background also includes education in mental health which later helped her in navigating issues with her family members. Over the years she has worked with adults of all ages and developed a passion for working with seniors and for educating caregivers and family members. When a loved one has dementia, caregiver education is an essential part of navigating their care..
Gina Grothoff’s father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2007. Her professional experience as an Occupational Therapist has been an asset to both her dad and her mom on his journey with this progressive neurologic disorder which has included dementia. She has been able to advocate for her parents in many situations as well as being the missing piece in the healthcare chain: communication. Communicating both with her father to help him deal with the anxiety of the emergency department, hospital, and rehab facility stays as well as with the health care providers to be more effective in helping him. She has also assisted her mom with navigating the terminology, policies and procedures of the healthcare environment.
With Ask The OT, you gain direct access to professional guidance without leaving the comfort of your home.
